Sight Word Lists for Grades K-5
The Fry word list or instant words are widely accepted to contain the most used words in reading and writing. The list is divided into ten levels and then divided into groups of twenty-five words, based on frequency of use and difficulty. Fifth grades should be able to read all of the words on the list by the end of the year. It is important for young readers to instantly recognize these words by sight in order to build up their reading fluency. It is also important for readers to practice words in meaningful context through phrase and sentence reading practice. As a follow up activity, students can practice writing short sentences including Fry words. Check out these websites for more sight word activities.

District Continues to be Proactive in Addressing Bullying
Bullying can happen anywhere, anytime to anyone – in person, by phone or online – and the impact can be devastating, especially to a child.
Broward County Public Schools was the first school district in the State of Florida, and possibly the nation, to adopt an anti-bullying policy and continues to be proactive in addressing bullying and creating a peaceful learning environment for students.
One hundred thirty-five School Board members, District and school educators, community leaders and parents have been invited to attend an advanced screening of the acclaimed documentary Bully, directed by Lee Hirsch, at the Pompano Muvico in Pompano Beach. Bully focuses on the impact bullying has on five different teenagers and their families.
The screening is the result of the collaborative efforts of the District's Diversity, Cultural Outreach & Prevention Departments and Project Bridge-Safe School/Healthy Students and Choose Peace-Stop Violence. The Weinstein Company is providing the film and Muvico is providing the facility free of charge.
Following the screening, a community forum will be held. The forum will be a "call to action" for peace in our schools and community. A panel of experts will engage the Board, educators, parents and community members in a conversation about how they can work together to create a culture of kindness, respect and inclusion in schools. In addition, participants will explore ways to respond consistently and effectively when incidents occur.
The District offers students, parents and others in the community a variety of ways to report incidents of bullying in schools.
Parents/students are encouraged to report incidents of bullying to their school's administrators and each school has a reporting box where incidents of bullying can be dropped off anonymously. Parents may also call the Silence Hurts Hotline (754-321-0911). Incidents may also be reported on the District's website (www.browardschools.com) or by texting. Text messages should begin with SBBC, followed by a space and the message. The text message should be sent to CRIMES (274637).
By continuing to work together we can ensure that all of our students have the safe learning environment they deserve.
